Practice makes…

Not helping the yard.I was just sending a note to a friend on flickr; we were talking a little bit about practice and photography. I heard in a podcast recently someone describe photography as being like playing jazz. There’s a framework there but plenty of room for expression. I find the more I practice the more the framework of composition becomes second nature and I can concentrate on expression.

Same goes for equipment. Nothing takes me out of my groove like struggling with camera settings or finicky lights. So I spend a fair bit of time just playing; goofy pictures of my kids at play. More than snapshots though, I try to put some thought into it.

Like this one of Chloe blowing dandelion seeds. Click through the photo for a description of the (pretty simple) setup.
